For the older generations, visiting the ‘pasar pagi’ or morning market is their version of going to the mall. Instead of feasting their eyes with clothes and make-up, the older generation loves looking at fresh local produce the merchants are selling.

Since they live a slow life compared to the newer generation, they have the liberty to visit the market as early as 6 am. They can do their groceries and meet some other visitors and friends at the pasar pagi.

But these days, the authentic-looking market no longer stands. We have some, but most use canopies instead of wood and zinc. It’s moveable and also can be rented through FAMA.

Does an old-style morning market still exist?

Therefore, have we ever thought if the older generation wants to relive the time when they used to visit the market back in their days? It surely will be different from ours. The younger generation: aren’t they curious to know how the old market looks?

If you don’t know, there is a morning market at Kubang Lembek, Terengganu. It opens every Friday. And wait when you see what the market looks like: you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Although we don’t quite know what old markets look like, we can picture it to be similar to Kubang Lembek’s pasar pagi!

The story behind the Kubang Lembek Pasar Pagi

According to a Facebook post, this morning market has two essential things: fresh everyday ingredients from the farm and the locals. Also, there’s a brief dhuha sermon from Al-Fadhil YB Ustaz Hilmi Harun and other practitioners.

What makes this market so unique is it was built in the early 1980s. It is a legacy left by the founder of Pusat Tarbiyyah Al-Kawthar, Al-Marhum TG (Tuan Guru) Harun Taib.

So, if you ever want to try etok (a type of snail), mushroom, freshwater prawn, ayam kampung (free-range chicken), herbs and others while reliving the old school vibes, visit the Kubang Lembek’s pasar pagi, opens only on Friday! You don’t want to miss this!
