We Tried kotsu kotsu, KL’s New Japanese Patisserie And the Chocolate Strawberry Cake Stole the Show

There’s a quiet beauty in how the Japanese approach desserts precision, patience, and a deep respect for simplicity. You’ll taste all that at kotsu kotsu Japanese Patisserie & Bake Shop, the newest addition to Kuala Lumpur’s dessert scene, inspired by Japan’s omiyage (gift-giving) culture.

We dropped by kotsu kotsu last weekend for a food tasting, and it’s safe to say it was worth every bite.

The cakes here are Muslim-friendly, thoughtfully developed by master Japanese patissiers who spent 11 months fine-tuning their recipes to suit local tastes without compromising authenticity. Everything is baked fresh, twice a day and you can tell.

The Taste Test

The Swiss Roll was a standout, soft, airy, and just the right amount of sweetness. It’s rare to find a cake that light yet satisfying. But the real winner for me was the Chocolate Strawberry Cake, a perfect balance of rich cocoa and refreshing fruit. Definitely the one I’d go back for.

The Fruit Cake also made my top three, 10 layers of creamy, fluffy goodness with just enough freshness from the fruit to keep each bite interesting.
