As thousands of students across the nation receive their SPM results today, a comprehensive new study by Uni Enrol reveals a significant shift in career aspirations.
Analysing the preferences of 54,813 SPM students from the 2025 user cohort, the Pathway Match (PWM) Insights Report shows that while traditional professions like Medicine and Law remain popular, the digital economy has become the primary driver for Malaysia’s youth.
The Digital Surge: Computer Science Takes the Crown
In a clear departure from previous generations, Computer Science has emerged as the most preferred discipline nationwide, with 6.58% of the total surveyed population selecting it as their top choice.
This “digital dominance” is visible in nearly every state, likely driven by the popularization of Artificial Intelligence and higher perceived earnings potential in the technology space.
When analysing the SPM students’ discipline preferences, the highest concentrations of computer science students, for example by % of users within each state that chose this discipline, are found in:
- Negeri Sembilan: 8.46%
- Putrajaya: 8.36%
- Terengganu: 7.61%
- Selangor: 7.27%
Regional Powerhouses: Examining Selangor, Johor, and Penang
While technology leads the national trend, the data for Malaysia’s major economic hubs, the states which make up a majority of the user cohort, reveals the enduring appeal of traditional professions.
- Selangor’s Diverse Landscape: In Malaysia’s most populated state, Computer Science leads (7.27%), but the race for remaining spots is tight between Accounting (4.26%), Law (4.21%), and Medicine (4.06%).
- Johor’s Lean Toward Medicine: Students in Johor show a particularly high interest in healthcare. While Computer Science is #1 (6.60%), Medicine follows as a strong second at 4.35%, outperforming Accounting (4.19%) and Law (3.78%).
- Penang’s Tech Focus: As the “Silicon Valley of the East,” Penang shows a high preference for Computer Science at 7.59%. Medicine remains the primary alternative at 4.28%, with Pharmacy and Accounting tied at 3.61% each.
A State-by-State Look at Career Aspirations
Across the Peninsula and East Malaysia, students are tailoring their choices to the evolving needs of their regions. While Computer Science holds the #1 spot in 13 out of 16 states and territories, the broader “Top 5” lists reveal a fascinating mix of professional and technical ambitions.

Unique Trends: The findings also identify localized hubs of interest, such as Chemical Engineering breaking into the Top 5 in Sarawak (3.94%) and Terengganu (4.24%), and Nursing appearing specifically in Kedah (4.10%) and Perlis (3.52%).

“While the ‘Big 3’, Medicine, Law, and Accounting, remain prestigious, the surge in Computer Science shows that students are pragmatically looking toward the future of work. We encourage parents to use these insights to have open conversations with their children about aligning their passions with these emerging market trends.”
