GEORGE TOWN, Nov 19 — The hotel fee charges waiver for Penang hotels has been extended until June 30 next year, State Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said.
He said the state government decided on the extension as part of efforts to support the recovery of the services sector.
“The state government understands the difficulties faced by many tourism industry players at the moment in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. This is one of the state government’s efforts to support the tourism industry’s recovery process, ” he said in a statement today.
Yeoh acknowledged that the recovery process will take time and the state government was counting on the support of all parties in helping the industry face challenges in the new normal and revive Penang’s tourism sector.
Hotel fee charges, introduced in 2014, are imposed on Penang hotels rated four stars and above at RM3 per night and RM2 per night for hotels rated three stars and below.
The state government last June waived the fee charges for six months to further boost domestic tourism after it was badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
