Checkmate! The Queen’s Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy Won Golden Globes 2021

The Queen’s Gambit star, Anya Taylor-Joy just won her first Golden Globe at the 2021 ceremony Sunday night.

She was awarded Best Actress in a Limited Series, Miniseries, or TV Movie for her role, making her the first Latina to win the category. She triumphed over Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Shira Hass all gave a shout-out during her virtual acceptance speech.

“Oh my goodness!” Taylor-Joy said upon winning. “Thank you so much! Nicole, Cate, everybody, thank you. I’ve spent so much time with you over lockdown, I feel like I know you. Thank you so much for your work.”

She also thanked Netflix and the “beautiful casts and crew” of the show.

The seven-episode show is based on a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis that follows Beth Harmon, an orphan who struggles with addiction and desire to be the world’s greatest chess player.

The show itself nominated for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology, or TV Movie. Its quality was critically praised and Taylor-Joy’s performance was highly applauded.
