Why It’s Too Expensive? Facts About ‘Black Thorn Durian’ That Many Should Know

Black Thorn Durian has a bright yellow and rosy orange hue, with its signature mark being its thick core and a reddish-brown line along the middle of the durian. This is the new darling of the durian scene that can out-price even Musang King with its rosy, flame-colored corpulence.  It is new even to Penang Island since it originates on the mainland side of Penang State.

Black Thorn’s flesh is thick and creamy. Comparing it to Mao Shan Wang, Black Thorn Durian tastes sweeter and more custardy. It also has a lighter texter. The Black Thorn mother tree originates in Kampung Lima Kongsi, near Sungai Bakap, just a bit to the south of the second bridge to the island. It was a secret for years.

These are some facts about the well-known Black Thorn Durian:

  1. Black Thorn Durian is a hybrid durian so it is created for a new variation of taste and marketing too. Black Thorn Durian is also known as D200.
  2. Black Thorn is only available in the middle of the year and there are limited places that sell this variety of durian.
  3. The price of Black Thorn can be fetched over RM 40/kg in 2017 and during the shortage of durians, they fetched over RM 100/kg, and now it is ranging RM 80/kg and above.
  4. Black Thorn durians numbers are limited to Penang at first and there are farmers bringing it to Pahang. Now, you can find Black Thorn durian from Pahang but for very limited numbers.
  5. Black Thorn durian has the most similar shape to Musang King durian. The Black Thorn durian is roundish in shape and it looks like a sign of a star at the bottom of the fruit.
  6. The real reason for its name is the small tiny blackthorn poking out of the tiny hole at the bottom of the fruit.
  7. People love this because it is softer in texture and not as filling as Musang King. Because this is still a relatively new breed, not many farms have this yet so it is still expensive.
