‘DCEU’ Rebrands? Now Known As DC Universe!

Warner Bros. Discovery released a statement that the DC Films brand is going to be rebranded. DCEU (DC Extended Universe) will now be known as DC Universe.

It appears that the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) brand has been discontinued after the unexpected announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran will be leading DC’s films, television, and animation division for Warner Bros. Discovery.

For your information, James Gunn is a director for some of hit movies such as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Suicide Squad 2.

Getting to know DCEU

The brand name “DC Extended Universe” was never really official within Warner Bros. Pictures. However, it stuck to the franchise for most of the mid-to-late 2010s. It all started when a journalist, , EW’s Keith Staskiewicz, made fun of Batman v. Superman in the magazine’s first-look cover story.

Staskiewicz was making a joke about how many Justice League characters the movie “Batman v Superman” had, and he called it the “DC Extended Universe”.

In 2018, Warner Bros. tried to give the franchise a new name. They called it as “Worlds of DC”. This didn’t quite catch on, though, and many people still call it as DCEU. At some point, the studio must have given in, because the DCEU has its own official hub on the HBO Max streaming service.

In an interesting twist, Johnson’s new movie, Black Adam, may have been a sign of yet another rebrand. The promise that “hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change.” was a big part of the movie’s marketing.
