After the release of Windows 11 on 5 October 2021, Microsoft gears up for another instant release— the awaited and upgraded Windows 12. It is rumored to arrive in 2024. So, what can we anticipate in this new update from Microsoft?

Some might wonder— what more can Microsoft offer? Windows 12 might be the extended version of Windows 11, with Microsoft tightening some loose ends and upgrading the existing apps. Perhaps, people are not that excited about this new Windows 12 after all. But Microsoft never lets its users down.

Expected New Features for Windows 12

TechRadar points out a few helpful features that we can expect in the upcoming Windows 12:

  • Merging Skype and Teams into MSN Messenger 12

    • This feature is expected to be upgraded as users are often puzzled about whether to use Skype or Teams on their Windows devices.
    • Merging these two applications can also make an easier connection with Zoom, Google Meet and Facetime.
    • For instance, the integration with Slack requires a video meeting. So, with the prompt in a channel and one button, MSN Messenger can launch instantly with the awaiting participants.
  • Live Wallpaper

    • This feature, in particular, is a request from TechRadar’s Senior Computing Editor, Matt Hanson.
    • It is a feature similar to iPhone and Android phones— the moving animations in these devices were once a hit.
    • But, this feature is not available for PC and Mac.
    • Live wallpapers can be accessed through third-party apps like Wallpaper Engine.
    • This feature brings a bit of a fun experience. Also, it makes our system feels more personalised and ‘us’.
  • A podcast app

    • The built-in media player in Windows is Windows Media Player.
    • It is a feature that plays songs on our laptops.
    • However, this feature can only do just that.
    • Therefore, in Windows 12, it will be exciting to see an upgraded version of Windows Media Player, which can sync with other subscribed apps across our devices.
    • For instance, macOS has had its podcast app since Big Sur in 2019, which is a step back to Windows since Microsoft does not have that.
    • As podcasts are growing in popularity, TechRadar suggests this podcast app be essential in Windows 12.
  • Dedicated streaming app

    • Jess Weatherbed, TechRadar’s former computing writer, proposed the idea of an integrated option in Windows to stream what we are playing.
    • Some of the popular streaming apps are OBS and Twitch.
    • Yet, these apps can be confusing to many users.
    • It requires more effort to ensure the high quality of the streaming to viewers while maintaining low latency.
    • Furthermore, added peripheral aspects are needed to provide better light for the streaming or a controller that setups with shortcut keys like Stream Deck does.
    • Windows 12 can clarify these confusions by creating a specific app that helps manage our streams and peripherals.
  • Android Companion

    • Desire Athow, the Editor-in-Chief of TechRadar Pro, suggests this could be an extension of Your Phone, one of the ways to sync our Android phone to Windows.
    • It is similar to Samsung DeX, which Samsung phones can use to link directly to Windows.
    • With this feature, it is easier for us to access the files on our phones and project them onto our desktops.
    • It lessens the hassle and saves time.

Windows 12 is coming sooner than anticipated. Are you ready for it?
