You Won’t Believe This Is Where Waterfalls Come From

We want to share something with you. When we were little, our parents often brought us to this waterfall in Kota Tinggi, Johor. When school was out, our parents drove around two hours (at that time) from Johor Bahru to Kota Tinggi Waterfalls. We remembered having so much fun playing in the cool water. Many people visited the place too.

Funnily, we’ve always thought waterfalls come from big lakes or pools on top of a mountain. Anyone who stands at the spot where the water drops surely face the greatest impact. It was so much fun! Thus, that’s what waterfalls were to us.

(We probably did learn this in school. Of course, we don’t remember…)

But that’s the power of technology. Social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter contain informative content (aside from the fun and possibly weird stuff).

Today we learned! This is where waterfalls come from

Kovin Siva (@kovzzz) is a naturalist. He went to Langkawi, one of the most beautiful islands in Malaysia. Kovin visited an area in Machinchang and followed the upstream.

The nature-lover explained that waterfalls came from a small pool! The pool makes up a stream that flows from higher to lower places. Therefore, that’s how waterfalls form!

The pool is also known as mata air. It’s the most natural water source you can ever get. But how does this pool form when there’s no water upstream? Well, between those rocks, the water droplets accumulate, thus forming a stream. From there, the stream might turn into a waterfall!

If you’re curious about where mata air comes from, you have to do some digging. However, a simpler way of knowing where this precious water source originates is from the collection of rainwater, as Kovin said, a natural jungle sponge.

Here’s another thorough illustration of waterfall formation:

Nature is the greatest gift to everyone in this world. Hence, we should always give back to nature by practising eco-friendly steps to make this world a better place to live for the next generation.
