When Culture Hits Hard: Drum Up JB Returns This September

Johor Bahru is about to get loud this September.

Drum Up JB returns to Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House (Sept 12–14, 2025) with a brand-new show “Drums: A New Beat Beckons.”

Think Broadway’s The Lion King, but Malaysian. The spotlight? Our very own 24 Festive Drums, tradition, culture, and modern vibes all rolled into one explosive performance.

But here’s the bigger picture: this isn’t just about entertainment. The mission is to push 24 Festive Drums towards UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2026.

From Johor to the World

Fun fact: 24 Festive Drums was born in Johor Bahru back in 1988, co-founded by Tan Chai Puan and the late Tan Hooi Song.

Fast forward to now, and there are over 600 drumming troupes worldwide, across Asia, Europe, North America, even Africa. It’s gone global, but here’s the twist: many Malaysians don’t even realize how big it is.

Why This Show Matters

“Drums: A New Beat Beckons” isn’t just a nostalgia trip. Directed by Yeo Lyle (who also helmed last year’s hit), this year’s edition adds fresh energy for the younger crowd.

Picture tradition meeting modern stagecraft, live storytelling, visuals, and the kind of hype that makes you forget you’re at a cultural show.

Advisor Lee Sheah Liang says last year’s turnout cut across age, race, and background. The dream? Make Drum Up JB a must-watch cultural show in Johor, the way Les Misérables is to London’s West End.
