UNIQLO Malaysia Strengthens Long-Term Commitment to Environment Conservation

Global apparel retailer UNIQLO today announced that it will continue its partnerships with Taman Tugu Malaysia and the Global Environment Centre.

This move reinforces its long-term commitment to protecting Malaysia’s natural ecosystems.

Marked by a joint launch, UNIQLO is contributing RM100,000 to Taman Tugu Malaysia. It is also providing RM200,000 in support of the Global Environment Centre to enable sustained, long-term collaboration.

This commitment reflects UNIQLO’s mission to make everyday life better for everyone.

It achieves this not only through its LifeWear clothing line. It also makes meaningful contributions that support local communities and the environment.

UNIQLO supports its efforts to protect Malaysia’s environment by charging RM0.30 for each paper bag.

Since introducing FSC-certified paper shopping bags in 2020, UNIQLO has channelled the proceeds into environmental programmes. These initiatives continue to support conservation efforts across Malaysia.

These contributions continue to support forest conservation at Taman Tugu Malaysia and mangrove rehabilitation with the Global Environment Centre.

They also build on earlier reforestation initiatives with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia.

Together, these efforts reflect a long-term approach where small everyday actions contribute to meaningful environmental outcomes.

“Our basic goal at UNIQLO is to make everyday life better for Malaysians, both through our clothing and contributions to society. Through our long-term collaborations with Taman Tugu Malaysia and GEC, we hope to make conservation more accessible and relatable, so people can see how everyday actions contribute to protecting nature,” said Dawn Chow, Sustainability Director of UNIQLO Malaysia.

As part of its extended collaboration with the Global Environment Centre, UNIQLO is supporting Phase 2 of a community-driven mangrove rehabilitation project in Kampung Tenglu Laut. The project was first initiated in 2025 in Mersing.

The Global Environment Centre partners in implementing the project. The Mersing District Office also supports it, reflecting a multi-stakeholder effort.

It addresses coastal erosion and climate-related risks. These risks continue to affect vulnerable coastal communities.

UNIQLO and GEC Expand Mangrove Conservation in Mersing

Phase 2 includes site preparation, planting, ongoing maintenance, and monitoring. It also involves the enhancement and 50-metre extension of Phase 1’s completed 100-metre wave breaker.

The project continues the rehabilitation of one hectare of mangrove forest.

KomPAS (Komuniti Pelindung Alam Sekitar) collaborates on all activities to support long-term ecosystem recovery.

UNIQLO’s RM200,000 contribution will enable the expansion of mangrove conservation by an additional one hectare. This effort builds on the encouraging outcomes from the first phase.

Earlier efforts saw the installation of a 100-metre wave breaker and the planting of 2,000 mangrove trees, achieving a survival rate of over 80% including replacement planting.

Project teams plan to complete Phase 2 planting by mid-2026.

“Mangrove restoration takes time, careful monitoring, and strong community involvement. Long-term partnerships are essential as they provide the continuity needed for restoration projects to succeed. Support from UNIQLO strengthens action, from protective measures to planting and maintenance, as well as community engagement; helping the Mersing coastline and local communities become more resilient amid increasingly challenging weather conditions,” said Faizal Parish, Director of GEC.

This collaborative work was recognised by the Mersing District Office in January 2026 when GEC received a Special Award for Mersing Sustainability Achievement under Teras 3 (Kebersihan), highlighting the partnership’s contribution to the district’s environmental conservation and sustainable tourism objectives.

Urban Forest Conservation and Community Engagement

Beyond coastal restoration, UNIQLO’s partnership with Taman Tugu Malaysia continues to bring forest conservation into everyday urban life through accessible, family-friendly community programmes.

Now in its fifth consecutive year, the collaboration reflects UNIQLO’s ongoing support for public engagement with nature and environmental awareness.

Project organizers expect recurring initiatives at Taman Tugu Nursery to reach thousands of participants of all ages from February 2026 to January 2027.

The UNIQLO, Taman Tugu Plant Giveaway, held twice monthly, will distribute 3,000 plants annually to members of the public, encouraging small but meaningful acts of stewardship.

Complementing this, the Plant & Hunt educational programme will engage up to 720 children each year through guided exploration and interactive learning about biodiversity, while a newly introduced Eco-Workshop series will provide hands-on sustainability learning for around 300 participants annually, including dedicated school engagement sessions.

“Urban forests thrive when people feel a sense of connection and responsibility toward them. UNIQLO’s long term support helps us keep programmes running regularly, so visitors can learn in a practical and welcoming way. When someone takes home a plant, joins an activity, or attends an Eco Talk, they begin to see the forest differently, and that is how stewardship grows,” said Fizulin Mohamed Zin, Project Director/Executive Director, Taman Tugu Project Development Sdn. Bhd. on behalf of the Amanah Warisan Negara.

UNIQLO demonstrates its belief that meaningful environmental protection grows through consistent, collective action.

By linking everyday customer choices with long-term conservation outcomes, UNIQLO hopes to encourage broader community participation in caring for Malaysia’s natural ecosystems, today and for generations to come.
