Skincare brand The Ordinary is set to launch its latest innovation, the Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner, on 8 May.
The new formula introduces a non-acid approach to exfoliation, offering an effective yet gentle alternative that improves skin texture while remaining suitable for sensitive skin.
Unlike traditional exfoliating toners that rely on acids, the new formulation uses N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) as its key ingredient to support surface exfoliation without compromising skin comfort.
A Gentle Approach to Exfoliation
Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner is a hydrating exfoliating toner powered by 30% Saccharomyces Ferment, which contains 3% fermented N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG).
This ingredient helps promote smoother and more radiant-looking skin by encouraging natural exfoliation on the skin’s surface.
The formula works by targeting the adhesion structures that hold dead skin cells together. By weakening these bonds, NAG allows dead skin cells to shed more easily, resulting in brighter and smoother skin.
According to Prudvi Kaka, Chief Scientific Officer at The Ordinary:
“Adhesion structures are targeted in exfoliation, and most exfoliating agents, like N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) and AHAs, work by targeting the adhesives that act as the glue holding dead skin cells together.”
Through this mechanism, the toner helps:
- Reduce the appearance of dark spots
- Improve uneven skin texture
- Minimise the look of enlarged pores
Fermentation Meets Hydration
The Ordinary integrates fermentation technology to enhance the performance of its ingredients. During fermentation, the chemical structure of compounds changes, allowing molecules to break down and form new active components.
In this formulation, fermented N-Acetyl Glucosamine is combined with squalane to reinforce the skin barrier while providing both immediate and long-term hydration.
The product achieves its distinctive milky texture using microfluidizer technology. The technology blends fermented NAG and oil-soluble squalane at high speeds to create microscopically small droplets.
This results in a lightweight, water-like toner with a soft milky appearance that spreads smoothly across the skin.
Designed for Sensitive Skin
Research indicates that sensitive skin affects approximately 60–70% of women and 50–60% of men, highlighting the need for gentler exfoliation solutions.
To ensure suitability across different skin types, The Ordinary’s Clinical Research team tested the Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner on 37 participants with self-assessed sensitive skin.
Tests found that the formula suits all skin types and that people with sensitive skin tolerate it well.
How to Use
Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner is designed to be applied during the Prep stage of a skincare routine, after cleansing and before treatment products such as serums.
It can be used twice daily and does not require rinsing.
