JAKARTA, Sept 8 — More than 40 people were killed in in a fire at a prison in Tangerang, East Java, Indonesia.
“The fire that took place at Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Kelas 1 Tangerang Blok C2 (prison in Tangerang) on Wednesday at 1.45 Western Indonesia time (WIB). The cause of the fire is believed to be due to a short circuit,” said head of the Kelas 1 Tangerang prison Victor Teguh Prihartono in a statement, here.
As of 9 am this morning, 41 inmates undergoing sentences for drug-related offences are confirmed dead.
The Kelas 1 block houses 122 inmates.
The Indonesian fire and rescue department, police and army are still doing the work of bringing the injured prisoners to the hospital, and transferring the prisoners of other blocks to a safe place.
