KL Nights Get a Glow-Up, Warung TERANG Brings Moving Light Art to City Streets

The streets of Downtown Kuala Lumpur are set to glow with creativity as Warung TERANG transforms the city’s laneways into a vibrant display of light, sound and cultural storytelling from 8 to 17 May 2026.

Unlike traditional projection mapping that focuses on large building facades, Warung TERANG introduces a mobile, artist-led experience, bringing digital art closer to the public in more intimate urban settings. The programme will unfold across several key locations including Jalan Tun H.S Lee, Jalan Sang Guna, Muzium Telekom and River of Life, inviting visitors to explore the city in a whole new way after sunset.

Developed by Filamen, Warung TERANG is part of the wider KL Fest, an initiative supported by Think City aimed at revitalising overlooked urban spaces and encouraging people to rediscover Downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Inspired by the concept of a pasar, or marketplace, the programme draws on Southeast Asia’s tradition of lively exchanges, not only of goods, but also of ideas, stories and cultural connections. Through moving projections, immersive visuals and sound, visitors can experience familiar city spaces transformed into dynamic cultural environments.

The event will run across two weekends, combining daytime workshops and evening street activations. At night, visitors can witness projection mapping performances alongside REAVANG, an open platform where artists experiment with visuals and sound in real-time urban settings.

What makes Warung TERANG unique is the direct interaction between artists and audiences. Visitors will have opportunities to speak with artists, observe behind-the-scenes processes and engage with artworks as they come to life, breaking the usual barrier between creator and viewer.

The inaugural edition features a diverse lineup of Southeast Asian artists, including Fairuz Sulaiman of Sekolah Main Wayang, visual collective Fonetikar, multimedia artist Tan Ji Kean, as well as Indonesian collectives such as The Fox, The Folks, Story of Karana, and Hue.

According to Abdul Shakir, Co-Founder of Filamen, the project aims to recreate the lively spirit of a traditional marketplace within the city streets.

“In a pasar, it’s never just about what is being sold; it’s about the people, the conversations and the shared stories that move through the space,” he said.

Warung TERANG is one of more than 80 events under KL Fest, which runs from 6 to 31 May 2026, featuring over 700 hours of programming, most of which are free to the public. The festival is organised by Think City in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and forms part of the broader Visit Malaysia 2026 celebrations.

Importantly, admission to Warung TERANG is free, making it an accessible cultural experience for families, art lovers and curious city explorers alike.
