We know them as one of the tiny harmless pests roaming our homes. But these distant family members of the average home lizards might make you see them in a different light.

1.Komodo dragon

The Komodo dragon or its scientific name Varanus komodoensis is the largest living lizard species. Mostly found on the Indonesian island of its namesake, this species could grow up to 3 meters and weigh up to 70 kilograms. Their size however does not hamper their ability to move fast and kill human beings.

You may visit these animals in the Komodo Islands of Indonesia. According to Indonesian tourism, menstruating women cannot visit the island. The lizards’ heightened senses of smell and attraction to the scent of blood could create unwanted danger. Despite their predatory prowess, these animals have been listed as ‘vulnerable’ due to habitat destruction and illegal hunting.

2. Asian Water Monitor

This species largely lives in India, Malaysia, and Indonesia, close to bodies of water. Its scientific name is Varanus Salvator. Also known as common water monitors, they are carnivorous and have insects, other lizards, other small animals as well as human corpses in their diet. They could grow up to 2.7 meters and actively pursues their prey by swimming, climbing, or even running.

Poachers also hunt this species for leather and medicinal values. A bite from the Asian water monitor will be harmful but not fatal with its venom.

3. Tree Crocodile

This species mostly lives in Papua New Guinea. Despite their preference for coastal areas, they have also been found living in the mountains. Unlike the previous two, they are mostly black with green, yellow, or white spots on their backs. They got the name ‘crocodile’ not only because of their distant relation to the larger reptile. But according to local tribesmen, the appearance of a Tree Crocodile signifies that crocodiles are in the vicinity.

It is said that this species is much longer than the Komodo dragon with growth up to 5 meters but the Komodo is much superior in weight.

4.  The Iguanas

However, its fancy exterior shouldn’t fool you. Its glands produce venoms and are equipped with sharp teeth that could cause serious injuries. They could grow up to 2 meters and weigh up to 6 kilograms.

5.Mexican Bearded Lizard

This lizard is the smallest on this list with a length of up to 80 cm. Its habitats are in the Pacific Coast of Mexico and Southern Guatemala. Stored fat will keep them warm to survive in the cold weather.

The bite of the Mexican Bearded Lizard is painful. Thankfully, no human fatality has ever been reported because its main diet is eggs. The venom however has been found to be beneficial in manufacturing drugs for diabetes treatments and there is ongoing research on its uses. Due to its benefits, it is hunted in illegal trade in Japan, Europe, and the United States.
